BCBS Medical Reimbursements for Federal Employees

A little extra is always a good thing, right? Extra cheese, extra storage…extra cash? As a current or retired federal employee, you could be eligible for an extra $800 this year, no strings attached. Federal Educators has some insight on this exciting opportunity!

Federal employees receive exceptional benefits, especially when it comes to healthcare plans. Upon retirement, these benefits continue and often create opportunities for affordable health insurance. Generally, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) offers the most popular plan for retired federal employees. Let’s take a look at why that is.

If you are enrolled in the BCBS Basic plan under the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program, BCBS will offer a reimbursement up to $800 for your Medicare Part B premiums. Eligible spouses may also receive this reimbursement for a total of $1,600. With no limitations or regulations on how you spend this money, save it or spend it. You decide!

Do I qualify?

If you meet the following requirements, you are eligible for the $800:

  • Are a current or retired federal employee
  • Have BCBS Basic Option health insurance (if you have Standard Option or FEP Blue Focus, you do not qualify)
  • Pay for Medicare Part B (this is in addition to Medicare Part A)

Your spouse is also automatically eligible if they meet these requirements.

How do I apply?

In order to apply, you must provide proof of your Medicare Part B premium payment. Below are the accepted documents you may use. Make sure to also submit your Medicare Part B premium bill that matches the amount paid.

  • A Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) statement
  • A canceled check
  • A copy of your credit card statement
  • A copy of your bank statement

In order to streamline the application process, BCBS offers four ways to submit your application. Whichever way you choose, you must download your claim form online.

  • Online at org/mra
  • On the EZ Receipts app, available at the App Store or Google Play
  • By fax at 877-353-9236
  • By mail at P.O. Box 14053, Lexington, KY 40512

The first two online options will give you the fastest results, usually one to two business days. There is also an option for direct deposit, which will also expedite the process.

Mailed or faxed applications can take up to 10 business days. Your reimbursement check will then be mailed to you.

The deadline to apply for this benefit is December 31 of the following benefit year.
